Knowing your field — and daring to own it

Some fields leave little room for mistakes. Radiopharmaceuticals is one of them. Products with half-lives measured in hours, reaching patients across the Nordics who depend on them arriving on time. At SAM Nordic, that is something we think about every day — and it is reflected in the people we have built our team around. People who know their field deeply and are not afraid to own it.

Meet Petra Vuorinen, based in Seinäjoki, Finland. When she is not working, you will most likely find her in the sky — literally. Skydiving is her great passion, and she describes it simply: the adrenaline, the absolute freedom, and the total focus it demands. There is no room for mistakes at 4,000 meters, and no space for distraction. It is, perhaps, not so different from her job.

Petra is a pharmacist by training, and before she joined SAM Nordic her career has taken her from hospital pharmacy to QA Pharmacist at a company that manufactured radiopharmaceuticals. That combination of backgrounds gives her a perspective that is genuinely valuable in this field.

A role that covers everything

As Country Manager Finland, Petra's responsibilities stretch far beyond sales. On any given day she might be working on forecasting, handling regulatory compliance, preparing for a tender, or meeting with customers. On top of that, she holds the role of GDP Responsible Person in Finland — serving as the primary contact with Fimea (The Finnish Medicines Agency) and making sure SAM Nordic's Finnish operations meet all national requirements.

It is a broad role, but one that suits someone who thrives on variety — and who knows the industry from the inside out.

Understanding the customer — really

In Finland, winning a tender matters. But Petra is clear that it is rarely the whole story. Long before a tender is published, the groundwork must already be laid.

"My approach has never been just to present a product," Petra says. "I first try to understand the customer's workflow, their challenges, and what they are trying to achieve. Once I understand that, it is much easier to discuss how our products or services can support their clinical practice."

Petra has worked across hospital pharmacy, radiopharmaceutical manufacturing and now commercial distribution — and that breadth shows, particularly in discussions about customer facilities, processes or implementation strategies.

"The decisions to implement certain diagnostics or treatments are rarely made by one person. It is a combination of clinicians, physicists, procurement, management, and budget holders. You need to understand all of them."

When there is no time to hesitate

Radiopharmaceuticals present a challenge that most industries never have to think about: some products have a half-life of just a few hours. Quality-related decisions cannot wait.

"There is not too much time to doubt and double-check everything. Instead, you need to have the quality system you can trust and the experience to know if the product is safe to use or not."

As part of SAM Nordic's QA team, Petra works alongside two colleagues whose expertise complements her own — one specializing in transport, storage and temperature surveillance, and one focused on regulatory affairs, pharmacovigilance and medical information. Together, they cover the full picture.

The Homer Simpson myth

Ask Petra about the biggest misconception surrounding her field, and she laughs.

"That we must wear protective overalls all the time — like Homer Simpson handling uranium. But we really don't." She adds the more important point: "The doses used as medication are always carefully considered by the physician. No patient is exposed to radiation just in case."

It is the kind of clarity that comes from someone who has worked with these products up close — and who understands both science and what it means for the patient.

Ask Petra why a pharmaceutical company should trust SAM Nordic with their radiopharmaceuticals in the Nordics, and she does not hesitate.

"Because we know what we are doing — and we do it with pride, dedication and reliability."

Sometimes that is all you need to know.

Getting it right, every time

At SAM Nordic, we believe that great pharmaceutical distribution is about more than moving products from A to B — it's about people who genuinely care about getting every detail right. When a radiopharmaceutical reaches the patient, the work behind it is rarely visible. There are no headlines for an order processed without errors, no applause for a customer who always feels looked after. But behind every interaction, there is a team working quietly and persistently to make sure everything goes exactly as it should. That is the reality of working at SAM Nordic — and it is something our team knows well.

Meet Mia Malmlund, one of our colleagues, based in Ingå, Finland. When she is not at work, you will most likely find her at the stables — horses are her greatest passion, and at home she shares her life not only with her husband, but also with four dogs and a cat. It is perhaps no coincidence that someone with such genuine care for living creatures brings that same warmth to her work.

Mia is a specialist nurse by training, and she has spent more than 20 years working across medtech and pharmaceutical companies, building deep knowledge of an industry where precision and accountability are non-negotiable. Today, she brings that background to her role at SAM Nordic, where she manages order flows and customer relationships — making sure every order is correct, every question is answered, and every customer feels genuinely taken care of.

"I work for a small but driven Swedish distributor in the pharmaceutical industry," she says. "Even though we are a small company, our commitment is anything but small — and I am proud to work with products that genuinely help people. For me, it matters that what we do has a positive impact on patients' daily lives and quality of life."

What customers don't see
Ask Mia what would surprise customers most if they could follow her through a working day, and the answer comes quickly: the sheer amount of coordination that goes into a single order. "A lot of planning, coordination, follow-up and checks go into making each delivery work," she explains. "When everything runs smoothly, it is barely noticeable — but there is often a great deal of work behind every single delivery."
That invisible effort is, in many ways, the hallmark of excellent logistics. The goal is seamless; the process is anything but simple.

Calm under pressure
In pharmaceutical distribution, things occasionally go wrong. Delivery windows shift. Supply chains face unexpected disruptions. What separates a good partner from a great one is what happens next — and whether they dare to take full ownership of the problem.

"With experience comes a certain calm," Mia says. "I usually know where to start looking and what steps need to be taken when problems arise — for example, in the supply chain. For me, it is important to act immediately, take responsibility, and stay on top of the situation until everything is resolved."

It is the kind of mindset that comes from years of experience — and from genuinely caring about the outcome.

Trust, built over time
At SAM Nordic, trust is not claimed. It is earned, delivery by delivery, interaction by interaction. "I believe trust is built over time, when customers see that we deliver on our commitments and that we always do our best when something unexpected happens," Mia says. "Customers should feel confident that we take responsibility, follow up, and actively work to find solutions when needed."

That philosophy runs through the entire organisation. Many people at SAM Nordic have been part of the company for many years — bringing with them not just expertise, but relationships and a shared sense of purpose.

And when challenges arise, they share both the responsibility and the commitment to finding a solution. "What unites us is that we genuinely care about our work and about the people we work for," Mia says. "We always strive to do our absolute best, and we take it as a given that we take responsibility, find solutions, and deliver service of the highest quality. Exceeding our customers' expectations is something we are proud of — and it motivates us every day."

Why SAM Nordic?
For pharmaceutical companies looking for a reliable distribution partner in the Nordics, the answer lies in precisely that combination: experience, commitment, personal relationships, and a team that goes the extra mile — not because they must, but because they want to.

Leading the next chapter

With a background in business development, digital transformation and change management, Erik is stepping into the role of CEO at SAM Nordic. Having already worked closely with SAM Nordic over the past year, he is eager to continue building on a strong foundation together with the team. We had a little chat with Erik to get to know him better.

Welcome to SAM Nordic, Erik! Who are you?

I’m a curious and fairly hands-on person who enjoys making things happen. I’m driven by developing both businesses and people. Outside of work, I appreciate the simple things, such as spending time with family and friends. It doesn’t really need to be more complicated than that.

What did you do before joining SAM Nordic?

I’ve spent a large part of my career working with business development, digital transformation, and efficiency improvements across different industries. Most of that time has been within food‑service wholesale, but I’ve also worked in automotive and greentech. Much of my work has revolved around leading projects, building strong teams, and driving change where business and technology meet.

What attracted you to this role and to SAM Nordic?

Over the past year and a half, I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with SAM Nordic on several business development projects. That has given me a good understanding of both the team and the industry. What stood out to me was the combination of doing something genuinely meaningful while being part of a company with strong potential. It’s a journey I’m very much looking forward to continuing together.

What expertise and experience do you bring to the company?

I bring experience in driving change, creating structure, and aligning teams around common goals. I also have a very pragmatic approach — I enjoy finding solutions that actually work in real life, not just in theory.

What do you think employees often misunderstand about the CEO role?

Perhaps that you’re expected to have all the answers — which you definitely don’t. A big part of the role is actually about asking the right questions, setting direction, and enabling others to succeed.

Which is more important to you: alignment or constructive disagreement – and why?

Both are important, but if I have to choose, I would say constructive disagreement. Without it, you risk missing key perspectives and making weaker decisions. That said, it has to be rooted in respect and a shared goal — otherwise it won’t lead anywhere.

What are you most looking forward to in your new position?

My ambition is to build on an already successful foundation while continuing to evolve the business. SAM Nordic is well positioned in the market, with a strong team and a highly relevant offering. At the same time, there is significant opportunity to further strengthen our position and deliver increased value to both partners and customers.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I mostly enjoy spending time with family and friends. When I’m feeling more active, I like mountain biking in the summer and skiing in the winter. Music is also a big interest of mine, and I enjoy playing the guitar whenever I get the chance.

What would you like employees to know about you as you step into this role?

Since I’ve already worked with SAM Nordic for some time, many people know me fairly well. As CEO, I aim to be clear, straightforward, and transparent. I want us to have an environment where we can speak openly about both challenges and opportunities. And I’m genuinely looking forward to the journey ahead — together.
